donnrisk

Introduction

donnrisk is a game written in Java loosely based on the Hasbro board game Risk[1] (it is in no way affiliated). It is network enabled and supports 2-6 players for World Domination, Mission, or Capital Risk.

Play donnrisk

Anyone can play donnrisk! It's fairly straightforward if you're familiar with the board game.

To play donnrisk, select a name and a game id. You will need someone else to play against, because there is no active computer player. All players wanting to play in a game must use the same game id. The game id can be anything, but try to make it unique to avoid conflicts.

Once you press Play, an applet will load and connect to the server. You need a Java plug-in in your web browser!

donnrisk history

donnrisk was the result of an intense and poorly planned development cycle for a computer networks course at the University of Victoria. It was originally developed as a standalone Java application. One player started a server, and up to 6 players connected to play World Domination Risk.

When it was done, the game worked very well, except for a few minor bugs. I vowed to continue development on it at some point, but it was left to age in it's repository for 5 long years. Then, in a surge of activity, I resurrected it as an applet with the hopes of kicking my friends asses.

I fixed some minor bugs, cleaned up a lot of code, and rewrote the server so that multiple games can be supported concurrently. Bugs fixed include the infamous "null's turn: please wait..." message and the annoying "Player is dead" message at the beginning of every turn. Man, I wrote some ugly code back then.
